What is a domain name
A domain is simply your address on the Internet. If you want someone to call you, you give them your phone number. Without which it will be impossible to call you. If you invite someone to your house, you have to give them your address. Likewise, if you want someone to find you on the Internet and visit your website, you have to have a domain name.
Top Level domain names (TLDs)
Ex: www.infinitilabs.biz
Second Level domain names (SLDs)
Ex: news.infinitilabs.biz
How do I register a domain name
- Browse to a domain name registrar online. We suggest: http://www.godaddy.com or http://www.name.com
- Type in the name or words of the domain name you would like to register in the search box.
- Perform a name search
- In case the name you want is taken already, search again using variations until what you search for is available. You can try adding a suffix or changing the extension to .net, .biz, etc
- Register the domain name.
- They will send you a Welcome email with details regarding domain ownership and login.
Note: You will need a credit card to make this purchase so make sure you have one at hand.
If you desperately need a domain name and someone else has purchased it, try contacting the owner and making an offer to buy it back. If someone the name you want is not available in the usual .com, .net extensions, try a country-specific domain extension like .lk (Sri Lanka), .jp (Japan), .us (United States)
