The Sri Lankan domain extension .LK is under the purview of the LK Domain Registry.
Registrations, monitoring and maintenance are handled by the Deptartment of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Moratuwa, on behalf of LK Domain Registry.
We took down some information from the official website and have given it here briefly. Even though it has a higher-than-usual price tag, for Sri Lankan companies who are targeting a mainly Sri Lankan base of customers, a .LK extension is good to go.
Domain Naming Structure
- Top Level Domains
- Closed Second Level Domains
- Open Second Level Domains
Top Level Domains
e.g. srilanka.lk
Once registratered under the top-level domain, the particular name is blocked in all the open second levels provided the second level domain is available. If they wish to use the open second level domain names in addition to the top level domain, it can be done by configuring DNS entries for the open second level domain, but DNS for both top level and second level should be hosted on the same machine.
Closed Second Level Domains
Certain second level domains are restricted for use by certain kind of users only. The following domains are restricted by the LK Domain Registry.
.gov.lk, .sch.lk, .net.lk and .int.lk
Registrations under these closed second level domains are handled directly by the LK Domain Registry.
.gov.lk has been allocated only to the Government of Sri Lanka. Only Government organisations and Departments are allowed to register under this category.
.sch.lk – for registered schools in Sri Lanka.
.net.lk – for licensed Internet Service Providers in Sri Lanka
.int.lk – for International Treaty organizations.
Open Second Level Domains
.com.lk – to be opened up as a second level domain
.org.lk - for registered organizations in Sri Lanka
.edu.lk - for educational sites
.ngo.lk - for non governmental organizations
.soc.lk – for registered societies in Sri Lanka
.web.lk - for web sites
.ltd.lk – for limited liability companies
.assn.lk – for associations
.grp.lk – for group of companies
.hotel.lk – suggested for hotels
Can a .LK name be reserved?
Yes, you can. Do a domain search and then the Hostmaster will contact you.
The usual procedure is 2 fold:
1. Name Reservation
2. Name Registration
How to go about registering the domain name
A domain name may be registered as given below. However, the LK domain registry also allows names to be reserved prior to their use.
Name Reservation
A domain name is reserved by submitting the form at http://www.nic.lk/form.html. A panel will evaluate the request and email the person who requests for the domain name.
A letter in the official letter head of the requesting organization with the information shown below to the LK Domain Registry accompanied by the payment.
- Name of the organisation
- Name of the domain to be reserved.
- Reason for choosing this name.
- Name, designation, address, telephone, fax and e-mail of the person to contact regarding this domain.
For information on how to make the payment, visit facts at a glance page.
This payment will reserve the name for a period of one year from the first of the month in which the reservation is made, and includes the reservation of the name, inclusion of the name in LKNIC’s databases, and a limited number of modifications.
The registration may be renewed at the end of the year.

What is a domain name
A domain is simply your address on the Internet. If you want someone to call you, you give them your phone number. Without which it will be impossible to call you. If you invite someone to your house, you have to give them your address. Likewise, if you want someone to find you on the Internet and visit your website, you have to have a domain name.
Top Level domain names (TLDs)
Ex: www.infinitilabs.biz
Second Level domain names (SLDs)
Ex: news.infinitilabs.biz
How do I register a domain name
- Browse to a domain name registrar online. We suggest: http://www.godaddy.com or http://www.name.com
- Type in the name or words of the domain name you would like to register in the search box.
- Perform a name search
- In case the name you want is taken already, search again using variations until what you search for is available. You can try adding a suffix or changing the extension to .net, .biz, etc
- Register the domain name.
- They will send you a Welcome email with details regarding domain ownership and login.
Note: You will need a credit card to make this purchase so make sure you have one at hand.
If you desperately need a domain name and someone else has purchased it, try contacting the owner and making an offer to buy it back. If someone the name you want is not available in the usual .com, .net extensions, try a country-specific domain extension like .lk (Sri Lanka), .jp (Japan), .us (United States)
